Installation of a Permeable Reactive Barrier to Prevent TCE Migration

Background
The main objective of this project was to design and implement a remedial action plan based on the results of a series of studies (biotreatability, phytoremediation, debris management) and a biological treatment pilot project. A key element for Biogenie to be awarded the contract was on its ability to provide performance and cost guarantees.

Solution
On the basis of the studies and pilot project results, Biogenie proposed a comprehensive and guaranteed remedial solution based on the segregation of the contaminated material followed by its remediation using a combination of biological treatment, thermal treatment, incineration and landfill.

Services

  • Design and construction of a soil treatment pad (3,500 m2) and storage area (1,600 m2 );
  • Ex situ Biopile treatment of 11,000 tons of PAH-contaminated soil, achieving 85% treatment efficiency within 6 months;
  • Segregation and stockpiling of
    5,000 m3 of highly contaminated soil (PAH >5,000 ppm) for on site thermal desportion;
  • Segregation and stockpiling of 240 m3 of tar for off site transportation and incineration;
  • Cleaning of contaminated debris with high pressure water;
  • Confinement and treatment of water runoff;
  • Backfill management.
