Site Remediation of a Former Petroleum Depot

Background
Leaks and accidental oil spills that occurred in the 50 years the petroleum depot was in service, resulted in soil and groundwater contamination impacted with BTEX, petroleum hydrocarbons, as well as No. 6 fuel (25% of total area). The area of the site was 40,000 m2 and bordered the St. Lawrence River. The property owner, a national railway company, demanded that the petroleum company restore the site in accordance with criteria established for industrial use.

Upon completion of the project, the railway company retained Biogenie’s services to carry on the treatment process in order to attain residential criteria. This was financially beneficial for the railway company since the land could now be sold for riverfront development, increasing property value by an estimated $1.5 M.


Solution

Following a 3D visualization of the site, Biogenie designed a cost-efficient remedial solution which relied on a combination of proprietary in situ and ex situ biological treatment processes. The in situ process was applied to the soil for a total treatment period of 14 months and simultaneously an ex situ Biopile for 20 weeks, resulting in the removal of BTEX by 98% and total petroleum hydrocarbons by 90%.
