Background
Operation of this upstream oilfield battery site resulted in the contamination of soil with crude oil and petroleum by-products.
Following removal of infrastructures, the remediation objective was
to achieve Unconditional Closure in compliance with the generic (Tier
I) hydrocarbon guidelines established for fine grain soil,
agricultural land use and protection of a groundwater potable
pathway.
Solution
The precise delineation of the extent of contamination and
estimate of the volume of hydrocarbon-contaminated soil was achieved
by utilizing our powerful 3D visualization tool. On the basis of
this comprehensive understanding and the treatability study results,
Biogenie proposed a remedial solution which combined the ex situ Biopile treatment of 17,500 tons of hydrocarbon-impacted soil
together with the excavation and disposal of 1,400 tons of highly
contaminated soil in an authorized landfill. This customized
solution proved to be the most cost-efficient for attaining the
remedial objective.
