Background
Operation of the petroleum bulk plant over a 45-year period
resulted in soil contamination, mainly in the truck loading/unloading
area. As the contaminated soil had already been excavated and
temporarily stockpiled on site, the objective of this project was to
treat 4,000 yd3 of soil impacted with over 3,000 ppm of Diesel Range
Organics (DRO) in order to reach a criteria originally established
at 1,810 ppm of DRO.
Solution
To cost-effectively achieve the project objective, Biogenie
proposed a biological treatment solution which bore a performance guarantee. The original criteria was reached after 3 months of
treatment. As a new clean up criteria was established at 500 ppm of
DRO, Biogenie continued the treatment for an additional 3-month
period. Final results indicated that light hydrocarbons were below
the detection limit whereas a treatment efficiency of 93% was
attained for the DRO.
