Background
The site, located in a heavily populated residential area neighbouring
the Thames River, was home to a manufactured gas plant dating back
to the early 1900s, thereafter, a petroleum depot and more recently
used as a scrap yard. The intended use of the site is to redevelop
the property along the riverbank incorporating a 10-acre park, shops,
restaurants, housing, hotel and community facilities following site
restoration. Biogenie’s
services were employed for the remediation
of soils contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons.
Solution
The treatment process selected was an ex situ Biopile
coupled with a biofilter for treatment of gas effluents. The biodegradation
efficiency, being 86% in the
11-week treatment period,
enabled Biogenie to reduce the concentration level of the contamination
in the soil well under the established criteria, which made possible
the recycling of the soil on the existing site as backfill.
Services
- Ex situ Biopile treatment of 11,000 tons of soil contaminated
with diesel and heavy oils;
- Recycling
of treated soil as backfill on the existing site.
